Anna Clough Staying at the Kuntur Wassi remains as one of the most remarkable experiences of my life. We went for Christmas and were welcomed into the family. Maria and Walter who own the hotel (this is a personal hotel run by Peruvians not part of a chain of hotels) are kind and gentle hosts. The village of Cabanaconde is remote, extremely remote. The hotel is on the hillside above the village, but only a couple of minutes walk from the square. Not much English was spoken in the winter / off peak season but I think they have English help in the tourist season.
Our room was very comfortable and beautiful design. The bath was not a jacussi I think that is bad translation for large bath! Food was good. Even though we are vegetarians they made a big effort to feed us well. The Colca Canyon is fantastic. One of the best places in Peru, and if you come to the far end to Cabanaconde it is very unspoilt. Make your way on trekking further into the mountains and you really are remote. Horses are available to hire.
